Uta jaage vahaa re aataa | Smaran karaa Pandareenaatha

Ramkrishnahari.

Our daily life is like a ‘bracket’.  There is a “(“ which denotes the opening of our day which is waking up.  There is also a “)” which denotes the closing of our day which is going to sleep.  What happens in between the “( “ &  “ )” is what we call as ‘life’.  Let’s look at this a little deeper.

-        “)” will not be relevant if there is no “(“.  In other words, if we do not wake up, there is no sleep.

-        Waking up brings with it awareness of everything around us.  Sleep is a dissolution of everything around us.

-        Waking up therefore brings consciousness along with it.

-        In the material plane, waking is always associated with light.  Sleep is associated with darkness.

-        Coming to the spiritual plane, waking corresponds to the awakening of the self, connoted as ‘jnaana’.  Anyone whose self is not awakened is in sleep which is connoted as ‘ajnaana’.

-        In the material plane, while both waking and sleeping are direly needed, alternating each other, in the science of the self, it is very much a possibility that we are awakened, never ever to enter into the sleeping state again.  In fact this is what is desired out of a human life.

-        A person who is asleep mostly needs someone else or something else like an alarm, to wake him / her up.  There are very few who can wake up on their own.  In the spiritual world too there is someone who is needed to wake us up.  That person is the bonafide ‘sadguru’.

This abhang by Sant Namdev Maharaj, while is sung as a part of the ‘Kakada Haarati’ to wake up the lord, in perspective and essence is all about waking us up.  It is indeed a very great ‘padhdhati’ (system) of inducting us with spiritual knowledge which all the spiritual greats of this land have carved out.  This knowledge is injected into us even without us realising it.  ‘Sant Namdev’ says :

उठा जागें वहा रे आतां        - Get up now ! wake up my dear !

स्मरण करा पंढरीनाथा        - Contemplate on ‘Sri Pandharinath’.

भावें चरणीं ठेवा माथा         - With all love, place your forehead on his feet.

चुकवा व्यथा जन्माच्या        - Give a slip & escape from the travails having to

                                           take birth again.

It would be unfair if we do not look the rest of this abhang.
